Icicles drip tantalizingly from the branches of white firs along the Glacier Point Road near Badger Pass. In all my years of winter revelry in the Sierra, I had never encountered a display of ornamentation such as this. Very nearly every tree had been decorated as if by the invisible hand by some benevolent trickster.

New Snow, Oak Branch (Yosemite Winter) New Snow, Oak Branch

There is a kind of zen simplicity to the fractal venation of this dormant Black Oak branch. Accentuated by snow, it swaddles the huge boulder behind in mothering embrace. There is no direct light anywhere in the scene and it was snowing quite heavily at the time. For years, the empowering clarity of this print greeted me each time I exited the soft yellow glow of my darkroom.

Mt. Starr King and Clark Range, Winter (Yosemite Winter) Mt. Starr King and Clark Range, Winter

A midwinter storm sweeps off Yosemite's southern boundary ranges leaving a freshly powdered Mount Starr King. As seen from the Glacier Point Road, the heavily forested Illilouette Creek drainage fronts the Clark Range, its highest summits swaddled in icy mists.

Warming Oak and Sentinel Rock (Yosemite Winter) Warming Oak and Sentinel Rock

The strong California sun warms a Black Oak, melting coated ice from its bare branches as Sentinel Rock keeps watch in coldly shadowed silence. On a day such as this, the range of light from brilliant snow to deep shadow, will test the photographer's understanding of film, exposure, and the skill to achieve his visualization.

Three Brothers, Winter (Yosemite Winter) Three Brothers, Winter

Freshly fallen snow blankets the forest floor as one of Yosemite Valley's most recognizable granite massifs pushes skyward from the North Rim. Stratocumulus fleck the sky's horizon above the Three Brothers: Lower, Middle, and Eagle Peak.

Summit Meadow, Winter (Yosemite Winter) Summit Meadow, Winter

Summit Meadow, formerly a nexus of Yosemite's nordic activity, lies buried in six feet of fresh snow. A young intercedent clings to meadow's edge while a lone backlit pioneer takes center stage before a glowering forest backdrop. Fir branches heavy with backlit clumps of snow make for a compelling study in monochrome tonal variation and micro–contrast. Maintaining the lively nature of the freshly fallen crystalline sugar snow blanketing the meadow became the foremost photographic challenge. Cross–country skiing, here to Glacier Point, provided me with the means to explore the park's wintry backcountry mantle.

Snowy Cascades, Merced River (Yosemite Winter) Snowy Cascades, Merced River

Early morning sun heightens the contrast of new snow and wet, deeply shadowed rock as the slumbering Merced cascades gracefully through pour–over channels. Come spring, Yosemite's melting watersheds will transform the river's course into an unrecognizable, watery maelstrom.

Snowstorm, Merced River (Yosemite Winter) Snowstorm, Merced River

I detoured from a quick trip into Yosemite Valley during a snowstorm one early March morning to survey this scene of quiet/riot alongside the Merced River. The compositional tension between the snow accented, keen edges of fallen boulders and the softly rounded form of the frosted live oak and linear pines, stands testament to the contrast of nature's intemperate and certain entropy with its equally resolute renewal of life.

Snowstorm, Ansel's Tree (Yosemite Winter) Snowstorm, Ansel's Tree

Fresh snow outlines the undeniable form of "Ansel's Tree" as I first discovered it. Coldly stark, it occupies a lonely wintertime outpost of boulders jutting out into the senescent Merced River. A favorite shooting location because of the exquisite early morning light, it succumbed to the forces of age and its brothering stream in February of 2009.

Seed Pods, Leidig Meadow (Yosemite Winter) Seed Pods, Leidig Meadow

After what seemed to be an interminable wait for proper afternoon light at a nearby location, I turned my attention to a group of barren seed pods, poking out no more than a foot from beyond the deep blanket of snow. Although completely shaded, the last few minutes of the westering sun burned a searing line of refraction off the rising mists on the receding meadows and the exquisitely silvered bounding cliffs. The pods are actually visible in the lower right corner of the print, Double Tree, Leidig Meadow.
