Driving south along US 395 through the Owens Valley one late afternoon, I raced the setting sun over the Sierra Crest just north of Taboose Pass as the day's thunderheads quickly dissipated. The contrast between the heavily laden clouds and their silvery linings was so great I was compelled to turn off the pavement and onto the first access road I came to. Remarkably, interspersed with the bright crepuscular rays were dark black rays, shadows fanning out to the heavens.
