Sixty Lake Basin is one of the loveliest and most remote locations in the High Sierra. I was fortunate to spend several days exploring this alpine Shangri–La, until eventually running short of provisions. When a helicopter appeared on the horizon of my final morning, I was ever so briefly hoping that it might somehow be dropping me resupplies of film and food. In reality it was dipping water with its cabled bucket from nearby lakes to dowse what eventually became a series of lightning ignited fires that would virtually close the southern Sierra backcountry until the autumn snows fell. For a different look, see Sunset, 60 Lake Basin.
