Reflections, Mirror Lake
Reflections, Mirror Lake
April, 2002

Do tree branches really grow up from the water? Overhanging branches from a still winter–bare Black Oak seem to be reaching out from Mirror Lake's depths towards the calmly reflected slopes of Half Dome. A long fallen tree branch suggests the true nature of things. The oft–photographed Mirror Lake is experiencing the eventual fate of most Sierra lakes, it is silting up and filling in. More meadow than lake these days, it now has enough water to mirror the surrounding cliffs but for a brief period of time during only the wettest of years.
